Discipline: The chemistry of living organisms and the molecular basis for the changes occurring in living cells.
Biochemistry laboratory contribute to the educative to the first year students of veterinary school in two semesters. It has also a multi-disciplinary research activity:
- Purification, isolation and characterization of proteins of therapeutic interest using of chromatographic and biophysical methods (i.e. crystallography, enzymatic characterization, fluorescence spectroscopy, light scattering, isothermal titration calorimetry etc.)
- Design, Discovery and optimization protein inhibitors in therapeutic areas such oncology and Rheumatoid Arthritis targeting proteins such PCNA, CDK2, GSK3, Cyclins, RANGL TNF and B-Raf
- Binding and bioactivity studies of lipophilic vitamins’ binding to proteins and lipids
- Studies and analysis of animal feed (protein. Lipids, trace elements)
Research activities of the laboratory available here.
Biosciences Award from Bodossaki Foundation: George Kontopidis received the Biosciences Award from Bodossaki Foundation (the list is available available here.) in 2008, in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Republic.
The Bodossaki Foundation, established the “Awards for scientific excellence” in order to support the creative work of young Greek scientists under 40 years of age. The Bodossaki Foundation seeks to reward Greek scientists’ commitment and effort to excel in their scientific field, as well as their dedication to serve as role models for the younger generations and the Greek society as a whole.
Academic and Research Excellence in Higher Education:
The Biochemistry Laboratory was recognized in 2012 by the Ministry of Education as a Centre of Centre of Excellence in Higher Education.
Fulbright Award: The Fulbright Foundation has awarded Professor G. Kontopidis in 2017 the “Greek Visiting Scholars” award. The Greek Visiting Scholars” award is aimed to Greek professors/researchers in order to lecture and/or conduct research at universities or research centers in the United States. The selection of candidates are based on professional qualifications, record of service to the field and to the home institution, academic excellence, career potential, civic engagement, personal qualities/abilities to serve as a cultural ambassador for Greece.
